Summer is just a few months away and in the Lowcountry, warm weather lasts from March to December. It won't be long until men and women are looking in the mirror wishing they'd spent more time at the gym to feel confident on the beach or at the pool. With the introduction of FDA-approved body sculpting treatment EMSCULPT at both Germain Dermatology offices in Summerville and Mount Pleasant, patients can tone and sculpt their body going from flab to fab in a shorter time frame.
Currently, EMSCULPT is approved to treat the abdomen and buttocks. Patients should not confuse EMSCULPT – which uses with non-invasive HIFEM® (High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic) technology – to electrical muscle stimulation. Unlike electrical stimulation, HIFEM penetrates deep into the tissue, and thus affects deeper motor neurons. Electrical stimulation works on the basis of the flowing electric charge between the electrodes, and as such the current remains on the surface and innervates only superficial motor neurons. Also intensity of electrical stimulation is limited due to pain and risk of burns. There is nothing like EMSCULPT – don’t fall for the gimmicks.
This groundbreaking approach to sculpting and contouring the abdomen and gluteal muscles is the first and only non-invasive body shaping procedure. It simultaneously burns fat while enhancing muscle utilizing (HIFEM) or High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic Energy. The FDA-approved device utilizes something called “supra-maximal contractions” – the stimulus strength is significantly more than required to activate all nerve and muscle fibers coming in contact with the device. EMSCULPT induces 20,000 forced muscle contractions per session, which is equivalent to completing 20,000 crunches, thus why results are not achievable through voluntary contraction. This treatment is ideal for people looking to fine tune their bodies and achieve more definition that isn't coming from typical work outs.

There have been seven independent studies for EMSculpt so far and an additional three are underway. The studies used MRI, CT, and ultrasound for result confirmations. The EMSCULPT achieves the following after just four treatments of 30 minutes per treatment:

Treatments are up to 30 minutes long and you will feel tightened muscle contractions. The procedure is performed while you are lying down and relaxed. The EMSCULPT device is placed directly on the treatment area. The beauty of non-invasive also means no incisions or injections and very little downtime. You may feel mildly sore following treatment which can equate to how you would feel following an intense work-out. You can go about your normal activities right after treatments. Four treatments over a few weeks is recommended for best possible results.
Once you've completed your sessions, body contours will continue to improve for months. Fat cells damaged during the process will clear out over the following weeks and months and you will continue to see your abdomen and gluteal muscles shaping.
