The old Coliseum Drive is no more. That's because the North Charleston planning committee, after a suggestion from WEZL Morning Show personalities TJ Phillips and Ric Rush, approved a measure to rename the road Darius Rucker Boulevard in honor of the local musician.
Rucker is not only a successful solo performer, but is also the lead singer of popular 90s band Hootie & the Blowfish.
The Coliseum Drive name will be given to a nearby unnamed road.
***UPDATE, 6/11/13, 11:42 am*** - In conjunction with this announcement, WEZL (103.5 FM) released a statement reading in part:
WEZL’s Ric Rush, who attended the meeting, had the privilege of calling Rucker to inform him of the honor. Darius expressed his gratitude saying “I’d never thought I’d have a street named after me. That’s one of the coolest things that has ever happened to me. I’m really excited about it.”
Later this summer, the city will host a ceremony to officially change the name to Darius Rucker Boulevard. That ceremony will be hosted by TJ Phillips and Ric Rush, and will be broadcast live on WEZL.
