Prepare for a cold front, Charleston. The King Street Mellow Mushroom is about to make the Holy City shiver.
During this weekend’s Second Sunday event, the downtown restaurant’s employees will kick-off the freezing cold “Ice Bucket Challenge” to raise awareness and money for ALS. This viral phenomenon has been around for a while, but has recently picked up momentum thanks to the professional sports teams in Boston.
Here’s how the challenge works: Someone dumps a bucket of cold water over their own head and then challenges someone else to do the same. The person who is challenged must film themselves getting doused and then issue the same challenge to other people. Each person has 24 hours to complete the task or they will have to donate $100 to the ALS foundation of their choic e. Of course, donations are encouraged either way.
As soon as the King Street Mellow Mushroom employees get soaked, they will ask the Avondale and Summerville locations to participate as well. Next up? The residents of Charleston.
After completing the challenge, participants should post their video on social media with the hashtag #StrikeOutALS and nominate three others to participate.
Even though Mellow Mushroom Charleston will be getting drenched, they will still donate a portion of its Second Sunday sales to the Pete Frates Foundation. They will also have a donation jar in the restaurant.
Pete Frates, a Boston College graduate and sports enthusiast, was diagnosed with ALS at the age of 27, and is the reason the Ice Bucket Challenge has become so popular. He created the #StrikeOutALS hashtag after accepting the challenge and it soon took off – to the tune of $160,000 in just 10 days.
