Be A Mentor Accepting Volunteer Applications to Mentor Students

Be A Mentor (BAM), a one-on-one, school-based mentoring initiative, has opened its application period for the 2017-2018 school year and is seeking volunteers in the community.

The "Bring a Friend & Be a Mentor Recruitment Happy Hour" will be hosted at DIG in the Park at 1049 E. Montague Ave, North Charleston to kick off the volunteer application period. It will be held on August 1st from 5:30-7:30PM.

BAM is seeking more volunteers for the 2017-2018 school year to meet the demand for more mentors. There is a significant need at all grade levels (K-12) in the greater Charleston area. Each of BAM’s 18 partner schools has a waiting list of students who want to be matched with a mentor for the upcoming school year. Be A Mentor is now accepting volunteer applications to best fit these community needs. Be A Mentor will accept volunteers on a rolling basis until February 2018, however to start mentoring at the beginning of the school year, contact BAM staff by September 1st. Training seminars for all who want to become mentors for 2017-2018 are now being offered.

Only one hour a week of mentoring can change a child’s life. Children who regularly meet with a
mentor show improvements in areas such as:

  • Increased positive attitude about school
  • 52% less likelihood than peers to skip a day of school
  • 46% less likelihood to start using illegal drugs

To become a mentor, or get your business involved in mentoring, sign up on the website at http://www.beamentornow.org/volunteer or contact Program Manager, Shila Wheeler, at [email protected] Volunteers must participate in a two hour training, pass a background check, and provide two references.
