Association for the Blind & Visually Impaired – Charleston (ABVI) is pleased to announce it has received an $8,000 grant from the Mark Elliott Motley Foundation to provide funding for vision clinics at two Charleston County elementary schools. These funds will support the continuation of ABVI's “Focus on Children” program which provides free vision screenings, comprehensive eye exams, prescription glasses, referrals, and eye care education to Charleston County students.
“The Mark Elliott Motley Foundation vision clinics will be held Mary Ford Elementary School and the Child & Family Development Center (CFDC) in September,” said Courtney Plotner, Chief Executive Officer for ABVI. “We are grateful for the Mark Elliott Motley Foundation's support as ABVI continues to address the visual needs of children throughout Charleston County.”
Through “Focus on Children,” ABVI provides free, comprehensive vision care, including prescription glasses and referrals to Charleston County students, mostly from Head Start and Child Development programs. Annually, the clinics serve over 1,500 students in 22 schools, 21 of which are Title I. A comprehensive eye exam for children not passing the initial screening is provided on site and, when indicated, ABVI provides free, prescription glasses and/or referrals to a doctor for follow-up care.
