In children’s author Kevin Kurtz’s newest picture book, A Day in a Forested Wetland, we find out who lives in a forested wetland and how the animals that are active during the daytime in this swampy home differ from animals that come out at night. Learn more about these animals from the author Kevin Kurtz on October 13th from 10 am – 2 pm at the Francis Beidler Forest in Harleyville, SC for the launch of Kurtz’s new picture book.
Kids will get a guided tour of the sites that inspired the book, go on a scavenger hunt, and listen as Kurtz reads his new book. All of Kevin’s books will be on sale during the event. Click here for more info on the event.
This newest installment of Kurtz’s A Day in a… series follows a similar format to the first book in the series A Day in the Salt Marsh. A Day in a Forested Wetland introduces a variety of animals that readers might encounter while spending a day in this unique ecosystem. Readers may be surprised by the diversity of animals that call a forested wetland home, and Kurtz shares captivating facts through rhyming stanzas. Neidigh’s artwork shines with vibrant colors and amazing detail on each page. After reading the story, kids are invited to learn more about the habitat in the book’s appended “For Creative Minds” section of fun facts and activities. In addition to forested wetlands, Kurtz has explored salt marshes, mountains and the deep sea in this series.
Kurtz was inspired to write this book while working as an environmental educator in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, where part of his job was to explore and teach people about the beautiful blackwater swamps of the area. In his travels, he realized that swamps, or as they are more scientifically known, forested wetlands, are found across North America. He wanted young readers to learn more about these unusual habitats that are likely quite close to most kids’ homes, and the amazing animals that live there.
Kurtz worked for years as an environmental educator and has personally explored a multitude of habitats and written curriculum about science and nature for numerous organizations, including the marine geology research vessel the JOIDES Resolution. Now, Kurtz spends his days either writing or visiting with schools across the country to talk with students about writing and his love for nature.
All formats of A Day in a Forested Wetland are available from local booksellers and online retailers beginning October 10th.
