The City of North Charleston will host its annual Veterans Day tribute on Monday, November 12th from 10:30 am to 1 pm at Park Circle, featuring the keynote speech of COL Tom Clark, US Marine Corps (retired). Veterans and the public are asked to join Mayor Keith Summey and City Council in this special ceremony. Each year, over 500 veterans in attendance are honored.
All veterans in attendance will be recognized and will receive a specially designed commemorative coin. To receive a coin, veterans are urged to RSVP to (843) 740-5801, (843) 745-1028, or via email at cdambaugh@northcharleston.org.
Prior to the ceremony, from 9:30 am to 10:30 am, a story swap will be held in the Felix Davis Community Center. Veterans will have an open opportunity to share memories and stories about their service with fellow veterans. The story swap is open to the public.
Lunch for all event attendees will be provided immediately following the ceremony with “Joe's Band,” comprised of veterans, performing during the luncheon.
The Department of Defense and the Veterans Day National Committee once again selected North Charleston as a Regional Site for Veterans Day 2018. North Charleston is the only site in the State of South Carolina and has received this designation for eight consecutive years.
Colonel Tom Clark, United States Marine Corps (retired)
Colonel Tom Clark graduated from The Citadel in 1985, earning a degree in Mathematics and Computer Science, and was commissioned into the U.S. Marine Corps through Naval ROTC.
He was designated a Naval Aviator in 1987. During his 30-year career as a Marine pilot, he accumulated 4000 hours flight time (primarily in the F/A-18) and flew 115 combat missions (all in the Middle East). He also deployed numerous times, participating in Operations Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom, and Iraqi Freedom. His overseas deployments included service in the Middle East, Far East, South America, and South Pacific as well as sea service aboard USS Coral Sea and USS Theodore Roosevelt.
Colonel Clark is a parachute-qualified Forward Air Controller who also served as the Senior Aide-de-camp for two Commandants of the Marine Corps as well as the J-5 Strategy and Policy Division Chief at United States Central Command Headquarters in Tampa. He commanded an F/A-18C Squadron in combat and an Aviation Training Group in South Texas. During his final tour, he served as the Commanding Officer and Professor of Naval Science of the Naval ROTC Unit at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina—the same unit where he began his Marine Corps career in 1985.
In July 2015, Colonel Clark assumed his current duties as the Executive Director of the Krause Center for Leadership and Ethics at The Citadel.
Colonel Clark is married to the former Amelia Shults of Columbia, South Carolina. They are blessed with two children—Caroline (married to Capt Brad Elliott, USAF) and Thomas—and three grandchildren, Amelia Ann, Henry, and Madelyn. The Clarks live in Charleston, South Carolina.
