Senior shortstop Luke Manzo (Marietta, Ga.) delivered in the clutch with a bases-clearing, three-run triple in the eighth, Tradd James (Sumter, S.C.) held Northeastern to one run over five innings, and Nathan Ocker (Middletown, Pa.) tossed a perfect ninth to lead the College of Charleston baseball team to a 7-5 come-from-behind victory over the Huskies in Colonial Athletic Association play on Saturday afternoon.
The victory marks College of Charleston’s (25-14, 8-3 CAA) 16th comeback win of the season, and moves the Cougars three games ahead of Northeastern(18-20, 8-6 CAA) in the loss column for second in the CAA standings. Charleston scored six unanswered runs with one in the fifth, one in the seventh, and four in the eighth to finish with seven runs on 13 hits – including three for extra bags. The Huskies plated five runs on 10 hits.
Bradley Dixon (Greenwood, S.C.) continued his torrid stretch with a 4-for-5 effort, while Manzo went 1-for-4 with the go-ahead three-run triple in the eighth. Logan McRae (Florence ,S.C.) finished the day 2-for-5 with a rally-sparking opposite field solo home run in the fifth, which moves him into a tie for sixth all-time with 33 career bombs.
Dupree Hart (Rock Hill, S.C.) collected two hits and drove in one with an RBI single in the eighth, and Danny Wondrack (Wall, N.J.) plated one with an RBI single in the seventh. Chaz Davey (North Augusta, S.C.) went 2-for-5 with a double.
James tossed five strong innings in relief to earn his first win as a Cougar, allowing one run on three hits and striking out four. Josh Price (Dillion, S.C.) tossed a scorelesseighth before Ocker shut the door with a perfect ninth to secure his ninth save of the season, and 23rd of his career.
Jake Farrell led the way for Northeastern with a 3-for-5 effort that included two runs scored and one RBI, as Jeff Costello plated two and Scott Holzwasser clubbed a solo homer. Kyle Peterson collected two base knocks.
Sean Mellen surrendered two runs and struck out 10 over six innings before giving way to the bullpen. Josh Winkler and Andrew Misaiaszek combined to allow five runs on six hitsover the next two frames, with Misaiaszek took his second loss of the season. Brandon Dufult pitched a scoreless ninth.
Charleston and Northeastern will meet in the rubber game of the three-game set Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m.
