Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center, the Charleston region's leading resource to prevent abuse, protect children and heal families, has been awarded a $50,000 grant from The Leon Levine Foundation (TLLF), a private foundation based in Charlotte, North Carolina. The grant will support Dee Norton's assessment, treatment and coordination services for children in the Lowcountry.
“We depend on gifts from generous individuals, companies and organizations like The Leon Levine Foundation to provide the services our clients need,” said Executive Director of Dee Norton, Dr. Carole Swiecicki. “This grant will help us serve 35 children at no cost to their families. We are grateful for this partnership with The Leon Levine Foundation.”
TLLF invests in nonprofits with strong leadership, a track record of success and a focus on sustainability in the areas of healthcare, education, Jewish values, human services and community. The foundation has partnered with hundreds of organizations committed to missions aligned with the vision of founder Leon Levine. Since its creation in 1980, the Foundation has committed more than $300 million to organizations throughout the Carolinas.
“Victims of abuse and neglect have a place to turn thanks to The Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center. The organization boasts an impressive track record with thousands given care, and its programs serve as a benchmark for other agencies,” noted Tom Lawrence, executive director of TLLF. “As we expand into new communities across the Carolinas, we are proud to fund organizations offering critical support and solutions to those in need.”
Dee Norton provides an array of best-practice services to children and their families when there is a concern for child abuse or trauma exposure. Services include forensic interviews, mental health assessments, therapy services and case coordination. As the primary provider of these services for children and families in South Carolina's Berkeley and Charleston counties, Dee Norton currently serves approximately 1,600 children per year. Dee Norton's level of care is proven to be effective – more than 90 percent of children who receive therapy from the Center show no clinically significant symptoms after their treatment.
In August 2018, Dee Norton opened its second Center at 677 Long Point in Mt. Pleasant and closed its downtown Charleston location at 1061 King Street for renovation and expansion. Beginning mid-July, Dee Norton will have space to serve twice as many children and families a year with the reopening of its original King Street location.
