To slow the spread of COVID-19, public safety personnel are proactively engaging the most vulnerable populations in North Charleston, reaching those in our community who may not have access to proper face coverings.
On Tuesday, June 30th, from 3 pm to 6 pm, City of North Charleston police officers will distribute nearly 15,000 face coverings from 11 locations throughout the city. In addition, North Charleston Police Department Neighborhood Resources Officers will reach out directly to residents in their areas of responsibility and fire personnel will distribute face coverings while out in the community.
North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey stated, “if we are going to be serious about combating COVID-19 in the Lowcountry, we have to continue to put our words into action and ensure that our citizens have the necessary tools to keep them and their loved ones safe. We must be selfless, and all come to the agreement that the doctors and scientists at the CDC and SC DHEC are the unequivocal experts on this disease. If we want our kids and grandkids to return to school in August, if we want to return to church and bible study, if we want our spectator sports back, it’s going to take everyone doing their part. The mild inconvenience of wearing a face coverings could save a life.”
The Center for Disease Control deems hand washing, social distancing, and wearing face coverings in public as necessary actions to slow the spread of COVID-19.
Why target vulnerable communities? According to the CDC, non-Hispanic black persons have a hospitalization rate approximately 5 times that of non-Hispanic white persons and Hispanic or Latino persons have a rate approximately 4 times that of non-Hispanic white persons.
Public Safety personnel will locate at the following locations throughout North Charleston from 3 pm – 6 pm: https://bit.ly/masksites
Individuals or organizations are interested in donating face coverings or funds towards the initiative, can reach out to the Office of the Mayor at 843-740-2504.
